SSCC Spring Training Schedule

SSCC's Spring training schedule is now available on SSCC's training web pages. We have several sessions that have never been offered before like "Tables in Word and WP", "Making a Painless Transition Off of Guy", "Converting Data Sets from SAS 6 to SAS 8", and "Overview of SSCC Resources" just to name a few. The "old reliables" like "Intro to Stata" and "Creating a Web Page" are still there as well. Remember that all SSCC training sessions require preregistration. Register early before sessions fill!

Procite Coming to WinCenters Along with a Special Workshop

Procite, personal bibliographical manager software, will soon be available on WinCenter1 and WinCenter2. We expect the software any day now and plan to install it during next Wednesday's down time. We have arranged for Patricia Herrling, a ProCite instructor from the Steenbock Library, to teach a workshop March 6 from 2:00-3:30. This workshop covers the basic features of using ProCite, including organization of databases and records, searching and sorting records, importing records electronically from MadCat, journal article databases, and Internet pages, and the preparation of bibliographies. Hands-on practice will be included. Registration is required and is available on-line at SSCC's training web pages.

Statistical Software (except SAS) to be Removed from GUY

As we announced in January's SSCC News, SSCC's oldest UNIX computer, GUY, is being retired this year. Monday, February 4, we will begin the first phase of this retirement by removing all statistical software except SAS from GUY. SAS won't be removed until August. Any statistical software that currently resides on GUY and no other UNIX computer will be moved to NORMAN. The exception to this is AML. AML will be moved to CDE's UNIX computer, MARIAH, because AML is only used by a small group of CDE members.

Limdep to be Removed from UNIX

The producers of Limdep discontinued support of Limdep on UNIX a few years ago. Recent upgrades to the UNIX operating system have resulted in Limdep being totally unusable in batch mode and of limited use in interactive mode. Since we can no longer obtain LIMDEP upgrades, we plan to remove this software at the end of the month. We don't think this will impact anyone but please contact Nancy McDermott if this is not the case. Note that Limdep still has a Windows product and ordering information can be found on Limdep's web site.

UNIX/Windows Terminal Servers Updates

We have made several hardware and software updates to the UNIX and Windows Terminal Servers since the end of last semester. These include:

Change in Consulting Schedule

We have shifted our SSCC consulting schedule slightly to open a half hour earlier and close a half hour earlier. The new schedule is 8:00-12:00, 1:00-4:00 M-F. Sandra Wald will be on duty 8-12 M-F. Charlie Fiss or Russell Dimond will be on duty for statistical software consulting 1-3 M-F (Charlie on Mondays; Russell Tuesdays through Fridays). Deb Brauer will be on duty 3-4 M-F. Please keep in mind that SSCC staff are always eager to assist you with your computing problems when we are in the building. If there is no consultant on duty, please don't hesitate to knock on one of our doors or look for us in the Computer Room. If you have any suggestions concerning SSCC's consulting service, please contact Nancy McDermott.
