If you ever change your mind, just notify the SSC Consultant or send mail to SSCNEWS asking to get back on the list. ----------------------------- WordPerfect on Sun and Ultrix ----------------------------- WordPerfect is now available on Sun and Ultrix. The Ultrix version is WordPerfect 5.0; the Sun version is WordPerfect 5.1. If you work on a Sun directly (in X Windows) you can use the GUI version of WordPerfect 5.1. Otherwise, you will see the character-based version. There are eight concurrent user licenses on each operating system. Please see the Bulletin on UNIX for more information on how to get into WordPerfect. ------------------------------ Tn3270 emulation now available ------------------------------ Tn3270 is a terminal emulator which permits a full-screen, full-duplex connection from a UNIX machine to an IBM (or compatible) machine. The installation was not an unqualified success, there are still some function key emulation problems. Currently, it is only available from the Sun network. Type tn3270 to run it; see man tn3270 for more information. -------------------------------- Consulting question of the month -------------------------------- There is a problem using EDT in conjunction with terminal emulation software which emulates a VT100. When you use EDT, you can edit normally, but after you Exit and your file is written, you don't see the $ prompt again. This is a result of changes in the VMS operating system. Digital is aware of the problem, but is no longer fully supporting VT100 terminal emulation. Please see the VMS Bulletin for information on workarounds if you are affected by this problem. ------------------------ SSC staff reorganization ------------------------ In its meeting on March 1, 1993, the Steering Committee of the SSC Co-op approved the following reorganization of the Co-op staff into three working groups: Technical Services: The areas of concern are the management and configuration of systems and networks; hardware maintenance and troubleshooting; research and planning for the future; acquisition and installation; computer room operations; systems programming; systems software installation, configuration, and management; application software installation and configuration. The core technical services group is Beth Wiebusch, Bruce Ruzicka, Elliott Long, Marcia Hazen, and Dan Popowich. Beth will be the Co-op's new Technical Services Manager. User Services: The areas of concern are training; consulting; documentation; application development; third-party application software licensing and testing; research, evaluation and acquisitiion of new statistical software; user-Coop communications (newsletters, town meetings, etc.). The core user services group is Nancy McDermott, Janet Clear, and Jeff Hayes (PA Consultant). Nancy will continue to serve as the Co-op's User Services Manager. Data Services: The Data Services group is an outgrowth of the project now underway to provide an on-line data facility for CDE. The group, however, will also take a broad view of data access, extending services to the entire Co-op. The group may enterprise projects for different constituencies; it should think about the distribution and "ownership" of storage facilities, including tape, disk, and optical; and it could be a forum for discussing alternatives to traditional data processing practices, particularly as we learn more about them from our and others' experience. It should try to stay informed about facilities that are evolving elsewhere and about emerging data management methods. The Data Services group will, at least at first, be identical to the membership of the CDE data access project: Tom Flory, Hal Winsborough, Nancy McDermott, Stephanie Fassnacht, Anne Cooper, Cindy Lew, and Rob Mare. Tom Flory will be the Co-op's new Data Services Manager. Tom Flory will continue to serve as the Co-op's director, representing the Co-op to the faculty and the outside world, and playing the main staff role in long-term planning, budgeting and personnel evaluation. Once the day-to-day details of this reorganization have fallen into place, SSC News will publish a chart listing each staff member's responsiblities. This will help you determine which staff member is likely to be involved in resolving specific problems. ------------------------------------ Interesting facts about the Internet ------------------------------------ At a recent conference, a panel of Internet experts stated: There are 15 million Internet users worldwide 1.4 million hosts The country with the most internet addresses per capita: Norway.
