======================== SSCC News, May, 19, 1997 ======================== We have a few important announcements that need to be made before SSCC News go out at its regularly scheduled time in June. Inside this issue... WARNING -- Unscheduled Downtimes could Occur this Week UNIX Downtime May 29-30 SSCC Summer Training Schedule New Print Queue Names ------------------------------------------------------ WARNING -- Unscheduled Downtimes could Occur this Week ------------------------------------------------------ The Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) which was ordered several months ago for the Computer Room arrived late last week. Physical plant will be installing it this week -- just in time for thunderstorm season! Some downtime is expected but we cannot schedule the times because it is out of our control. Read broadcast frequently as announcements will be posted there. Once the UPS is in place, when power is lost, we will have a power supply that will allow us to shut down machines in the computer room gracefully. ----------------------- UNIX Downtime May 29-30 ----------------------- UNIX will be down for two days beginning May 29 in order to install recently purchased equipment. We need to move data off old disks we are retiring (the few remaining RZ58 disks which have been failing at an alarming rate) onto new disks we purchased with Capital Exercise funds. At the same time we would like to replace ethernet cards on Digital UNIX machines with faster ethernet cards which should significantly increase network bandwidth. These ethernet cards were purchased with money from the NSF network grant. It is possible that this downtime will be reduced to one day, depending on how some tests with the fast ethernet cards go. If the tests go poorly, we will not install them on the 29th and so will not need that downtime day. Please note that VMS and the PC LAN computers will be operational during this UNIX downtime but mail delivery will be sporadic. No e-mail will be lost during this downtime. ----------------------------- SSCC Summer Training Schedule ----------------------------- Note: All SSCC training sessions require preregistration. If at least five people have not preregistered for a course one week prior to its start date, the class may be canceled. To preregister for a class, send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend. You will be reminded about your preregistration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins. Descriptions for each of the training sessions listed below may be found in SSCGOPHER. If no training session is offered for a topic you are interested in, please send mail to SSCCLASS requesting a session. We will schedule a session if a minimum of five people request training on a topic. Hopefully, you will find these queue names easier to figure out. The old queue names will still work for a while. The table below lists the new queue names and their shortcut aliases: ASCII Postscript ---------|----------------------------|------------------------------ | Alias | Alias Output | Queue Queue | Queue Queue Location | Name Names | Name Names ---------|----------------------------|------------------------------ Computer | single s | single_ps sps Room | double d | double_ps dps | single2up s2up | single2up_ps s2upps | double2up d2up | double2up_ps d2upps ---------|----------------------------|------------------------------ I/O Room | iosingle ios | iosingle_ps iosps (Self- | iodouble iod | iodouble_ps iodps Serve) | io | iops | iosingle2up ios2up | iosingle2up_ps ios2upps | iodouble2up iod2up | iodouble2up_ps iod2upps ---------|----------------------------|------------------------------ 2470 | user2single u2s | user2single_ps u2sps User | user2double u2d | user2double_ps u2dps Room | u2 | u2ps (Self- | user2 | user2ps Serve) | user2single2up u2s2up | user2single2up_ps u2s2upps | user2double2up u2d2up | user2double2up_ps u2d2upps ---------|----------------------------|------------------------------ 7413 | user7single u7s | user7single_ps u7sps User | user7double u7d | user7double_ps u7dps Room | u7 | u7ps (Self- | user77 | user7ps Serve) | user7single2up u7s2up | user7single2up_ps u7s2upps | user7double2up u7d2up | user7double2up_ps u7d2upps ---------|----------------------------|------------------------------ Although the old queue names will work for now, they will disappear at some point, probably this time next year. At that time we will be changing a lot of logical names on VMS.
