Packages ----------------------------------------------------------- Electronic Submission of Graduate School Research Proposals ----------------------------------------------------------- Graduate School research proposals due by September 19, 1997 must be submitted via the World Wide Web's Netscape Navigator for the first time this year. Faculty members should have received a letter last week from Dean Hinshaw regarding this matter. The Graduate School is offering phone support (2-4959) and three workshops to assist those unfamiliar with the web. These workshops are offered at 301 Bascom Hall at the following times: 9/4 9-11, 9/10 9-11, and 9/15 1:30-3:30. No registration is required. If you cannot attend one of these sessions, SSCC consulting will be glad to assist you. -------------------------------------- New Version of SPSS Available on EAGLE -------------------------------------- SPSS on EAGLE has been upgraded to version 6.1.1. This is production level software and represents a significant improvement over the previous version of SPSS. SPSS users who currently submit SPSS jobs to SSCB queues are encouraged to start submitting their jobs to EAGLE queues instead. Note that SPSS on EAGLE can read SPSS system files created on SSCB without first creating an export file. However, the reverse is not true because the version of SPSS on SSCB is an older version (4.1). If you save your SPSS data set in export format, then older versions of SPSS will be able to read it. ----------------------------------------------------- WordPerfect to be Removed from WinCenter October 1997 ----------------------------------------------------- We are having serious problems with WordPerfect on WinCenter especially with regards to printing. Corel, the company that develops WordPerfect, has informed us that they do not support WordPerfect on this platform. For this reason, we are removing WordPerfect from WinCenter on October 1, 1997. WordPerfect users on WinCenter will either need to convert their documents to Word or use a different platform for WordPerfect processing. The Social Science Microcomputing Lab (SSML) on the 3rd floor of the Social Science Building has WordPerfect 7.0 available on their PCs. We regret any inconvenience the removal of this software may cause and hope to be able to provide WordPerfect in the future should a new version be supported under a multiuser environment like WinCenter. --------------------------------------------- Old Versions of LISREL to be Removed from VMS --------------------------------------------- All old versions of LISREL will be removed from VMS on October 1, leaving version 8 on EAGLE and version 7 on SOC3 and SSCB. If this will cause problems for anyone, please notify consultant before this date. ------------------------ Status of LISCOMP on VMS ------------------------ The company that distributes LISCOMP, Scientific Software, has informed us that LISCOMP is being discontinued. A new product is being developed that will replace LISCOMP and should be ready sometime in 1998. However, this new product is being developed for the PC platform. When this new product is announced, we will provide users with information on how to order the software for their PCs. SSCC plans to keep the version of LISCOMP we have for SOC3 and SSCB as long as the software will run. Beware though that LISCOMP may be incompatible with future upgrades of the VMS operating system. ------------------------------------------------ New Version of WiscWorld Now Available from DoIT ------------------------------------------------ DoIT is now distributing Version 3 of WiscWorld on CD-ROM. This version requires Windows 95 or NT version 4.0. You can get this software from the DoIT Tech Store or University Book Store Digital Outpost for $7.50. WiscWorld software can also be downloaded at any campus networked computer. Visit the WiscWorld web site at http://www.wisc.edu/wiscworld. for details. SSCC consulting also has a few copies available for loan. For more information about WiscWorld 3.0, go to http://www.wisc.edu/info/showroom/specsheets/400-4.html. DoIT has no plans to provide further updates (beyond version 2.5) for Windows 3.1 users. ------------------------------------------------- Web-based Activation of WiscWorld E-mail Accounts ------------------------------------------------- New this fall is web-based activation and modification of WiscWorld email accounts. You can activate your account, set or change your email forwarding address, and change your password (if you know your old one) by connecting to the WiscWorld web site at http://www.wisc.edu/wiscworld ------------------------------- New SSCC Handbook Now Available ------------------------------- The "UNIX Introductory Handbook" and "VMS Introductory Handbook" have been replaced by one document called "SSCC Handbook." This updated handbook better describes the current computing environment and policies of the SSCC including the Microsoft Windows network and WinCenter. The operating system specific information that was in the previous handbooks is now contained in separate documents: "VMS Operating System Users Guide" and "UNIX Operating System Users Guide." All three of these documents are available from the Consultant or in the documentation racks of the Public Terminal Rooms. -------------------------------------------------- ELM Mailer Upgraded: ELM users should run newalias -------------------------------------------------- The Unix ELM mailer has been upgraded to the latest version. Users of ELM who use ELM aliases should run the newalias program to make sure that their old aliases work on the new version of ELM. To do this, type newalias at the UNIX prompt. ------------------------------- RSH and RLOGIN Upgraded on UNIX ------------------------------- New, more secure, versions of RSH and RLOGIN have been installed on UNIX and will become available as the default utilities during this week's Wednesday morning downtime. When you use RSH or RLOGIN for the first time, you will get the message: "Creating random seed file ~/.ssh/random_seed. This may take a while." After about twenty seconds, your command should run; this message will not return. RSH and RLOGIN from non-SSCC UNIX machines to SSCC UNIX machines will no longer be possible. You can use either TELNET or SSH to connect to SSCC UNIX machines from non-SSCC UNIX machines. If you use SSH, your login session will be encrypted and, so, not susceptible to snooping. ------------------------------ MIME Readers available on Unix ------------------------------ For UNIX users who do not use mailers that can automatically unpack MIME encoded messages (messages with attachments), the tools MPACK and MUNPACK are now available. See the reference pages for these two commands ("man mpack" and "man munpack") for details on how they are used.
