Request Project Space

On 8/30/2024, the SSCC Chairs & Directors Committee directed the SSCC not to buy new storage space for at least two years. Instead, as many project directories as possible will be moved to ResearchDrive, freeing up space for projects that cannot be moved. The SSCC will only create new project directories for data that cannot be stored in ResearchDrive. This will save SSCC members an estimated $150,000 over two years and more going forward by taking advantage of the large investment the University has made in ResearchDrive..

Most SSCC data are stored in project space, where you can store large amounts of data and share it with others. As of the fall of 2024, most projects will go in ResearchDrive, the University-provided research data storage service. The SSCC provides space for projects that cannot go in ResearchDrive.

To request space in ResearchDrive, fill out the ResearchDrive Request Form. For more information, see Using ResearchDrive.

If you need project space for data that cannot go in ResearchDrive, email the SSCC Help Desk. Please include the name you want the project to have, whether it should go on the Linux file system or the Windows file system (if you will ever use the Linux servers it must go on the Linux file system), and the names of the people who should have access to the project.

Only PIs can request ResearchDrive space (see the eligibility rules), but they can make it available to graduate students and others. Graduate students who need project space should speak with their advisor or another faculty member and request space in that faculty member’s ResearchDrive. (Faculty, we are counting on you to make sure all grad students can store their data in ResearchDrive).

Data that cannot be stored in ResearchDrive include:

  • Sensitive or restricted data that must go in the Silo environment.
  • Data that are not for research, such as administrative data or data to be shared with a class.

ResearchDrive provides 25TB of free space. If you anticipate needing more than 25TB, either right away or in the near future, email the Help Desk and we’ll talk about the best way to meet your needs.
